The red tape put in the way of veterans attempting to reach a settlement for the deadly cancer they contracted through companies who supplied materials to the government has proved prohibitive for many individuals.  The line to proceed with litigation takes years to navigate, years that many veterans cannot afford to wait.  As a consequence, recent legislation known as the FAIR Act, which is currently in the Judiciary Committee will ease some of the regulation surrounding veterans and speed up the process of reaching a settlement. The Bandera Bulletin Reports:Given the advancing age of our surviving WW II veterans, time is short for these particular victims of asbestos-related illnesses. Veterans who've been diagnosed with deadly asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma and lung cancer find it almost impossible to get compensation for their exposure under the current system.Read More: Veterans + asbestos more...

Bill Ewins, 71, passed away last week prior to recieving nearly $200,000 in damages by BHP Whyalla Shipyards.  Ewins had contracted the disease by being exposed to blue asbestos which was sprayed on the bulkheads of boats during the period from 1949 to 1963 in which he was employed there.  There was initial concern that his death might throw into question the $197,287 award for pain and suffering that he was to recieve.  Thankfully, the situation has been resolved to allow the payment to transfer to his wife.  Business Breaking News Reports:"That was an enormous relief to Mr Ewins because it had the potential to devastate his award," she said.Read More: BHP worker dies before payout more...

A study released this week stated that 730,000 people in the United states have filed for asbestos-related injuries from the early 1970s through 2002.  The RAND Corp. study indicated that the total cost on the part of businesses and insurance companies has surpassed $70 billion US.  Much of this is due to the increase in claims beginning in the 90s as non-cancerous injury claims became more prevalent.  The Washington Times Reports:Claimants received about 42 cents of every dollar spent on asbestos litigation, the study by the RAND Institute for Civil Justice said. Another 31 cents has gone to defense costs, and 27 cents has gone to plaintiffs' attorneys and other related costs.Read More: Asbestos suit claims hit 730,000 more...

An Asbestos Victims Association in South Australia is calling for the Mesothelioma drug Alimta (permetrexed) to be subsidized by the government.  The drug has been shown to prolong survival time and improve the quality of life for mesothelioma victims, however, the treatments are often prohibitively costly.  The relative rarity of the disease means that subsidizing it would not prove extremely costly for the Australian government, estimates being around $4 million annually. WHYALLA NEWS Reports:Whyalla Asbestos Victims' Support Group chairperson John Arthur said he did not know of any local sufferers using the drug, mainly due to its cost."We are certainly for the push to list it," Mr Arthur said.Read More: Calls to subsidise mesothelioma drug more...
